Become a Professional Charter Skipper – Training & Miles Building
Want to turn your sailing passion into a professional career? Our comprehensive training program prepares serious sailors for the realities of charter skipper life. We’ll be honest – it’s not all sunset cruises and grateful clients. But for the right person, it’s incredibly rewarding.
The Reality Check First
Let’s start with what charter skipper life actually looks like:
The Rewards
- Get paid to sail: Work in stunning Mediterranean locations like the Balearics, Sardinia, Greek islands
- Variety: Different boats, routes, and clients every week
- Skills development: Constant learning in weather, navigation, boat systems
- Networking: Build connections across the international sailing industry
- Seasonal flexibility: Peak season April-October, options for winter work or personal projects
The Challenges
- Responsibility: You’re accountable for expensive yachts and client safety 24/7
- Irregular income: Peak season earnings must cover quieter months
- Difficult clients: Not everyone understands sailing limitations or weather delays
- Physical demands: Long days, night watches, boat maintenance in heat
- Living aboard: Small spaces, shared facilities, limited privacy
Still interested? Good. The industry needs professional skippers who understand both the privileges and pressures of the role.

Investment & Timeline
Time Commitment
- Qualification phase: 6-12 months (depending on starting point)
- Miles building: 3-6 months active sailing
- Total program: 12-18 months to employment-ready
Financial Investment
- RYA qualifications: (varies by starting level)
- Miles building program: (includes accommodation, meals, mentorship)
- Living expenses during training: Plan for your monthly living costs
Yes, it’s a significant investment. But compare it to other professional qualifications – and remember, you’re investing in a career that lets you sail professionally.
Real Graduate Experiences
“The miles building was invaluable. Theory teaches you navigation – experience teaches you when to cancel a charter because the weather’s borderline and clients are nervous. That judgment only comes from real situations.”
– Sarah M., now senior skipper with charter company in Sardinia (2 years experience)
“First season was tough – long hours, demanding clients, equipment failures. But by season two, I knew what I was doing. Now in my fifth year, I can’t imagine doing anything else. The freedom and variety are worth the challenges.”
– James P., freelance skipper covering Balearics and French Riviera
“Don’t romanticize it. Some weeks you’re dealing with seasick guests and broken autopilots in 30-knot winds. But when you’re anchored in a perfect bay watching sunset with grateful clients who’ve had the week of their lives… that’s when you remember why you do this.”
– Marcus R., charter skipper and delivery captain (7 years experience)
Selection Process – We’re Choosy Too
Not everyone is suited for charter skipper life. Our selection process ensures mutual fit:
